Freshman Kevin Interlicchio, starting his first varsity game, scored 4 goals and added 3 assists as the Huskers took care of business upstate.

John Jay fell to the number one ranked squad in the country, however, they surpassed many expectations sans their best defender, Ryder Bohlander.

Kyle Ahlers scored the game winning goal for the Indians, as they were able to thwart off a second half comeback from Prep.

I’d appreciate some insight from these games …

Hen Hud vs. Putnam Valley Highlight Video

Hen Hud Escapes

30 03 2007

Putnam Valley, NY – Both Nick Sarcone and Jake Green recorded a hat-trick as the Hen Hud Sailors took down the Putnam Valley Tigers, 10-9, on Friday, March 30.

Hen Hud jumped out to an early , 4-2, first quarter lead, as Sarcone netted two goals. Tom Kelly kept the Tigers close, scoring with 1:51 left in the first.

However, as the second quarter began, the Sailors began to ride a wave of momentum. It started when Colin Parkhurst hit a cutting Green at the 9:58 mark. Sarcone followed that by once again finding the back of the net after driving to the cage with authority. Then Robbie Bosco came up with a magnificent take away on the defensive end, igniting a fast break which Alex Kaufman finished, beating Cory Ender with a top shelf shot. The run ended the same way it began, as Parkhurst once again found a cutting Green, putting the Sailors on top 8-3 going into the half.

In the second half the Tigers tightened their resolve on the defensive end, limiting Hen Hud to only two goals. Ender was a huge reason for the heightened defensive intensity, as he made countless spectacular saves, standing on his head numerous times, thwarting the Sailors shot attempts.

The defensive prowess spurred the offense towards a comeback. Tom Kelly was instrumental, netting his third goal of the game with 8:00 remaining to pull the Tigers with in three at 10-7. Jimmy Fitzsimmons and Hugh Gorman kept the momentum alive, both putting home goals to pull Putnam Valley within one. However, the expiring game clock would end Putnam Valley’s second half heroics, as the Sailors held on for the final 5:26 to secure the win. Sailors goalie Ryan Desilva was huge in the final moments, coming up with big save after big save.

Personal Notes

Although Hen Hud All-American Rob Bosco didn’t light up the stat sheet, his talent was still unmistakable in every other facet of the game. Bosco did it all for the Sailors, engineering clears, playing hard nosed defense and exhibiting some nifty moves in the open field. He was able to get off a decent amount of shots in the second half, but they were either wide of dinged a pipe. Bosco must finish such opportunities if the Sailors expect to defeat Wantagh on Monday.

The comeback effort by the Tigers was certainly inspiring. You just got the feeling that if the game went on for an additional 10 minutes, then they would have come out on top.

The renewed defensive fire that they displayed in the second half clearly triggered the effort. They were able to pack it in with a stifling zone, forcing the Sailors to take mid-to-long range shots. Each and every man had his head on a swivel, making perfect slides to prevent the Sailors attack from breaking the plane of the goal and scoring. Then there was Ender, who showed a lot of courage in the cage. He was quite impressive.

Overall, it was the top game of this young season. The youthful Tigers showed guts and were able to hang with the more experienced and talented Sailors. On the other end of the spectrum, Hen Hud was able to hang on, showing the value of leadership and experience in a tight game.

John Jay Stomps Rye: Coach Savastano’s 100th Win

29 03 2007

Cross River, NY– Brian Douglass (pictured below) led the charge with 4 goals and 1 assist as the John Jay Indians destroyed the Rye Garnets, 11-1, on Tuesday, March 29. John Jay began their scoring barrage a mere 27 seconds into the game on a Jake DeCandia missile.

douglas sum picfinal.jpgDouglass then cashed in on back-to-back goals. The first was on a fast break feed from Kevin Stockel. He followed that by making a strong move from “X” and finishing a crank from the wing. John Jay took a 3-0 lead going into the second quarter.

The game turned sloppy in the beginning of the second, as the Indians dropped passes destined to be assists and dinged pipe after pipe. Rye was able to hang tough for awhile, holding John Jay scoreless for the first 8:42 of the quarter.

However, the Garnets eventually succumbed to the strong counter pressure of the John Jay attack unit, as the combo of Bocklet, Stockel and Douglass prevented them from successfully engineering a clear. In the absence of starting goalie Colin Hart, the Garnets were hopeless, turning the ball over countless times in their own defensive end.

Douglass made them pay, netting his third goal of the game with 3:42 remaining in the second off a feed from Chris Bocklet. John Jay didn’t stop there, as they closed out the final 3:30 of the half with four straight goals. The stretch commenced with a quick stick goal from Will Stewart off a feed from Bocklet and ended with a strong bounce shot from Bocklet on the wing. Entering half-time the Indians had built a comfortable 7-0 lead.

John Jay cruised in the second half, outscoring Rye 4-1.

Personal Notes

John Jay has a very strong attack unit in Stockel, Bocklet and Douglass. They are able to finish on the fast break and also create within the offense. Bocklet was especially impressive, craftily making moves from “X” to create for his teammates in front of the net. His quick feet were no match for the Rye defensemen.

Douglas proved to be deft finishing the ball. Both off feeds from his teammates and on strong dodges to the cage. However, beyond the offensive fire power, what impressed me the most was their ability to ride. They hounded the Rye defense from the onset, creating turnovers in the offensive end of the field which resulted in goals. It was a terrific, hustle infused performance.

Chris Latino, who was making his first varsity start in goal for the Indians, didn’t allow a goal. He also didn’t have to make very many saves either. Needless to say, it’s always good to start your career with a 0 GAA.

Overall, the John Jay defense, captained by Ryder Bohlander, was too strong and fast for the Garnets. They were able to physically enforce their will upon them. As a result, Rye was never able to comfortably settle into an offense.

Huntington will be a huge test for the Indians. Sans Bohlander, it’s tough to see them winning. However, if they are able to contain the Bratton bros. in the midfield and patiently run their offense to perfection, there is a shot at an upset. Maybe …

Desirable Weekend Games: Men’s Lacrosse

28 03 2007

Here are some great match-ups that are taking place this weekend.

3/30 — Friday

Hen Hud @ Putnam Valley at Putnam Valley High @ 4:30 p.m.

  • Good measuring stick game for both teams. However, look for the Sailors and Bosco to eventually take over.

3/31— Saturday

Yorktown vs. Shenendehowa at SUNY ALBANY @ 3 p.m.

  • ‘Town, coming off a down year, will look to set things straight early by taking down a tough team in Shen’. With Section II and the Albany region rapidly improving in the sport of lacrosse, this cannot be seen as a tune up game for the Huskers. They will also be forced to travel 2 1/2 hours upstate, so it’s not unfeasible for Shen’ to pull off the upset. However, look for ‘Town to wear down Shen’ in the later stages of the game and pull out the victory.

Mahopac vs. Fordham Prep at Mahopac High @ 3 p.m.

  • Indians should take care of business in this match-up.

John Jay @ Huntington at Huntington High @ 3 p.m.

  • This will be the ultimate early season test for the Indians, as Huntington is the two time defending champ and widely regarded as the number one team in all the land. If John Jay wants that state title, they need to prove they can hang with the elite. Jay isn’t ready for this game. Let the team mesh and let’s revisit it in June.
