Cross River, NY– Brian Douglass (pictured below) led the charge with 4 goals and 1 assist as the John Jay Indians destroyed the Rye Garnets, 11-1, on Tuesday, March 29. John Jay began their scoring barrage a mere 27 seconds into the game on a Jake DeCandia missile.
Douglass then cashed in on back-to-back goals. The first was on a fast break feed from Kevin Stockel. He followed that by making a strong move from “X” and finishing a crank from the wing. John Jay took a 3-0 lead going into the second quarter.
The game turned sloppy in the beginning of the second, as the Indians dropped passes destined to be assists and dinged pipe after pipe. Rye was able to hang tough for awhile, holding John Jay scoreless for the first 8:42 of the quarter.
However, the Garnets eventually succumbed to the strong counter pressure of the John Jay attack unit, as the combo of Bocklet, Stockel and Douglass prevented them from successfully engineering a clear. In the absence of starting goalie Colin Hart, the Garnets were hopeless, turning the ball over countless times in their own defensive end.
Douglass made them pay, netting his third goal of the game with 3:42 remaining in the second off a feed from Chris Bocklet. John Jay didn’t stop there, as they closed out the final 3:30 of the half with four straight goals. The stretch commenced with a quick stick goal from Will Stewart off a feed from Bocklet and ended with a strong bounce shot from Bocklet on the wing. Entering half-time the Indians had built a comfortable 7-0 lead.
John Jay cruised in the second half, outscoring Rye 4-1.
Personal Notes
John Jay has a very strong attack unit in Stockel, Bocklet and Douglass. They are able to finish on the fast break and also create within the offense. Bocklet was especially impressive, craftily making moves from “X” to create for his teammates in front of the net. His quick feet were no match for the Rye defensemen.
Douglas proved to be deft finishing the ball. Both off feeds from his teammates and on strong dodges to the cage. However, beyond the offensive fire power, what impressed me the most was their ability to ride. They hounded the Rye defense from the onset, creating turnovers in the offensive end of the field which resulted in goals. It was a terrific, hustle infused performance.
Chris Latino, who was making his first varsity start in goal for the Indians, didn’t allow a goal. He also didn’t have to make very many saves either. Needless to say, it’s always good to start your career with a 0 GAA.
Overall, the John Jay defense, captained by Ryder Bohlander, was too strong and fast for the Garnets. They were able to physically enforce their will upon them. As a result, Rye was never able to comfortably settle into an offense.
Huntington will be a huge test for the Indians. Sans Bohlander, it’s tough to see them winning. However, if they are able to contain the Bratton bros. in the midfield and patiently run their offense to perfection, there is a shot at an upset. Maybe …
